The lilies of the field
For many years the tiger lily has been a symbol to me of my birthday, since mid to late June is the time of year that these flowers burst into bloom in my mother’s front yard. Coincidentally, tiger lilies also grow on the side of the road over the Kent Narrows Bridge. On my many walks on the island, my heart has been drenched in the blessing of God visibly exhibiting His love towards me through the presence hundreds of tiger lilies!
While at anchor in Lovely Cove last week, one of the banks was blanketed in tiger lily blooms. Their radiant orange captures the on-looker’s attention, because they truly are a strikingly brilliant flower. At night, these lovely florets close and re-open again each morning as the sun beckons through its bathing rays of sunlight.
Wealth and Prosperity
I recently learned that the tiger lily stands for wealth and prosperity. How perfectly fitting that God chose the lily to represent how well He takes care of His creation. He clothes the lilies of the field “prosperously” and in vibrant colors revealing the “richness” and “wealth” that He desires to bestow upon those who trust Him instead of crouching in worry. Consider the lilies through this meditation:
Why do you worry?
Matthew 6:28-30, “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all His glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field [which grow wild on the side of the road here on the island and along creek banks in the summer time], which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven [the lilies have already disappeared and it is only July 5], will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”
